Conventional farmer Greg Williams, who manages 370 acres of fruit trees in Leelanau County, including 180 acres of tart cherries, views SWD as his biggest concern, even surpassing unpredictable weather and fluctuating prices. Over the past decade, SWD has become an increasing burden, compelling farmers to invest significantly more in insecticide applications. Williams estimates his tart cherry crop for 2026 will be only about 30 percent of his regular yield, largely due to SWD. "We have a couple additional coverage sprays for it, so it’s quite pricey on 370 acres to put two or three extra sprays," he explained, highlighting the escalating input costs.

Research at the Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Center, initially believing SWD targeted only fully ripe fruit, has since confirmed its ability to infest underripe cherries, making early detection and control even more critical. For farmers like Greg Williams, who is 63 and contemplating retirement, the decision to downsize or sell is driven by a combination of factors. He is currently in the process of selling a 217-acre property with 65 acres of fruit trees, located on prestigious ground overlooking Lake Michigan. "It’s the best view you could ever imagine," he noted, highlighting the irony that the very qualities that make the land ideal for fruit cultivation—high elevation, protection from frost—also make it highly coveted for residential development. He believes the next owner is unlikely to continue farming cherries.

Old Mission Peninsula, a narrow strip of land north of Traverse City renowned for its protective microclimate against frost, exemplifies this dilemma. Once primarily cherry orchards, the peninsula has seen a dramatic shift towards wine grapes over the past four decades, with 1,800 acres planted. While wine grapes once offered higher returns, even vineyards are now facing their own challenges, with a projected glut in Northern Michigan and a national decline in wine consumption among younger demographics. MSU extension educator Nicki Rothwell and her colleagues are actively researching solutions for problems like the spotted wing drosophila, including biological controls like introducing wasps, though initial experiments have proven unsuccessful.

Rothwell suggests that smaller growers, with their inherent agility, might be able to diversify away from cherries. However, the unpredictable climate makes crop selection difficult. Options like growing apples or transitioning to a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model are being explored, but a "silver bullet" remains elusive. "My fear is that it’s houses. It’s the quickest way to pay farm debt, and they have the best sites still left in the region," Rothwell articulated, expressing the deep concern that development will ultimately consume the remaining agricultural land. Experiments with alternative crops like hops and saskatoon berries have also struggled to find sufficient market demand for financial viability.

Some farmers are turning to value-added products and agritourism as a means of survival. Sarah and Phil Hallstedt, who operate a 53-acre farm with over 9,000 cherry trees in Northport, represent this adaptive spirit. After struggling to turn a profit selling sweet cherries on the wholesale market and finding U-pick operations only marginally better, they pivoted to developing processed cherry products. Their focus landed on cherry vinegar, an investment that required on-site production facilities. They now sell their cherry vinegar in grocery stores across Michigan, with an ambitious goal to expand demand sufficiently to purchase cherries from neighboring farmers at a more equitable price than traditional processors. "Maybe it’s just us being stubborn," Phil Hallstedt conceded, "Instead of wanting to pull out, we’re trying to find a way to make the cherry farm work."
