Hollywood-Burbank Airport (BUR), long cherished by locals as Los Angeles’ convenient “secret” airport, is poised to gain broader recognition following the grand opening of its transformative $1.3 billion terminal. This ambitious construction project, culminating in the October 13th unveiling, introduces a state-of-the-art 355,000-square-foot facility, a substantial expansion that is approximately 53% larger than its predecessor. The new terminal, branded as Elevate BUR, represents a significant leap forward in both safety and passenger experience, blending modern functionality with a sophisticated design that pays homage to Hollywood’s golden era.
The journey to this milestone began with the approval of the project in 2016, with construction commencing in early 2024. The decision to build a new terminal rather than renovate the existing structure was driven primarily by critical safety concerns. The original terminal, erected in 1930, was situated a mere 250 feet from the runway, a distance that fell significantly short of current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) design standards. “The old terminal is not up to FAA design standards,” stated John T. Hatanaka, Executive Director of Burbank Airport. “This is a safety project.” The new Elevate BUR terminal has been strategically positioned much farther from the active runway, boasting an impressive 880 feet of separation, thereby exceeding contemporary FAA safety mandates. This enhanced setback not only bolsters safety but also allows for the accommodation of larger, more modern aircraft.
Beyond the paramount safety improvements, the Elevate BUR project embraced an opportunity to infuse the airport with aesthetic appeal, reflecting the vibrant culture of Southern California. Natural light floods the expansive interior, illuminating design elements that evoke the glamour of Old Hollywood. A striking silver roof canopy at the entrance is a deliberate nod to the silver screen, while a unique spotted ceiling pattern draws inspiration from the iconic dress Marilyn Monroe wore when she famously sang "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy. This thoughtful design imbues the airport with a sense of place, transforming it from a mere transit point into an experience.

A New Era of Efficiency and Comfort
During a press preview on October 5, 2026, a firsthand impression of the new terminal revealed that the airport has successfully retained its hallmark simplicity and ease of navigation, now augmented with a renewed sense of character and enhanced amenities. For travelers accustomed to the convenience of BUR, the transition promises to be seamless, offering a significantly upgraded experience without compromising the airport’s core appeal.
Streamlined Access and Enhanced Security
One of the most immediate benefits for travelers is the consolidation of two former terminals into a single, expansive facility. Located in the northeast quadrant of the airport, the new terminal is just a short distance from the original site, with clear signage guiding visitors to the updated drop-off and pick-up zones near Winona Avenue and Hollywood Way.
The security checkpoint has also seen a significant upgrade. With eight TSA screening lanes, an increase from the previous five across both terminals, wait times are anticipated to be even shorter. Strategically positioned between gates 9 and 10, the TSA area provides quick access to all gates. A timed walk to the furthest gates confirmed this efficiency, with the farthest gate, Gate 1, reached in just four minutes, and Gate 14 in a mere two minutes.

While the number of gates remains at 14, a stipulation of the agreement with the City of Burbank, the larger terminal footprint allows airlines to deploy larger aircraft. “The difference is airlines will not have to worry about what aircraft they bring here. It will even fit the [Boeing 737] Max 10,” Hatanaka remarked. Previously, the proximity of the old terminal to the runway restricted some gates to smaller aircraft, such as Southwest’s 137-seat Boeing 737-700. The new gates are now equipped to handle aircraft with wingspans up to 118 feet, including larger variants like the 175-seat Boeing 737-800 and 737-8, and even Frontier’s 240-seat Airbus A321neo, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. However, it is important to note that factors such as Burbank’s relatively short runways and warm weather conditions may still necessitate airlines to adjust passenger loads, baggage, or fuel for certain larger aircraft departures.
A Wealth of Modern Amenities
The Elevate BUR terminal is thoughtfully equipped with a diverse range of amenities designed to enhance the passenger experience. The culinary landscape features 13 local food and beverage concepts, including popular establishments like Perry’s Joint, Poquito Mas, and Guy Fieri’s Flavortown, offering a taste of regional flavor. Complementing the dining options are six retail spaces, including the charming Octavia’s Bookshelf, a beloved bookstore located within Pasadena Mercantile.
Post-security restrooms are a particular highlight, boasting upscale tilework and mirrors reminiscent of a high-end lounge. These facilities also offer complimentary menstrual products, a progressive amenity that underscores a commitment to passenger comfort and equity. Further enhancing the terminal’s inclusivity and convenience are three family rooms, two ADA-compliant rooms, and two dedicated nursing rooms. For traveling companions, a thoughtfully designed pet relief area, complete with a miniature fire hydrant, adds a touch of whimsy and practicality.
Travelers awaiting their flights will find ample power outlets throughout the terminal, including convenient cord-free magnetic charging stations at desks. A minor but crucial detail for travelers to note is the inclusion of USB-C slots exclusively, rather than traditional USB ports, so preparation with appropriate adapters is advised.

Strategic Growth and Future Outlook
While the new terminal significantly enhances capacity and capability, the immediate increase in the number of daily flights is expected to be moderate. Burbank currently handles between 70 and 85 flights per day, a figure that is projected to remain largely consistent in the short term. However, Hatanaka expressed optimism for future growth, stating, “We are hoping to work with our airline partners to show what this terminal can provide.”
Southwest Airlines continues to be the dominant carrier at BUR, accounting for approximately 56.5 percent of the airport’s traffic. The airline’s immediate focus is not on introducing new routes but rather on transitioning to newer, larger aircraft. Andrew Watterson, Southwest’s COO, explained, “There will be some growth in flights, but most of the growth will be the seats. The larger planes are about 27% larger in terms of seat capacity, and they’re also quieter and burn less fuel.” This shift will increase the number of seats available on existing routes, rather than dramatically increasing the flight frequency. Watterson also indicated a desire to increase the frequency of existing nonstop routes, such as the twice-weekly service to Honolulu.
Addressing another long-standing passenger concern, parking has been significantly improved with the addition of a six-level, 2,000-spot garage equipped with Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations, conveniently situated mere steps from the terminal entrance.

Demolition and Legacy
The completion of the new terminal marks the beginning of phase two: the demolition of the original structure. “We’re at $1.3 billion, and that includes $30 million for demolition,” Hatanaka confirmed, reinforcing that the project remains on budget and on schedule. Under the development agreement with the City of Burbank, the old airport facility must be demolished within 12 months of the new terminal’s opening. Upon completion of the demolition, the site will be reintegrated into the airfield operations.
In essence, the newly unveiled Hollywood-Burbank Airport terminal successfully preserves the attributes that have endeared it to travelers – its compact size, operational efficiency, and stress-free environment – while introducing expanded space, enhanced amenities, and a stylish, modern upgrade that pays tribute to its storied past and looks confidently toward the future. The Elevate BUR project signifies not just an infrastructure improvement but a commitment to providing a superior and safer travel experience for all who pass through its doors.
